Why Is It Called a Tennis Bracelet? The Story Behind an Icon

Few pieces of fine jewelry feel as effortless as the tennis bracelet.

A continuous line of diamonds, delicate enough to wear every day and brilliant enough for the most special occasions. Its design is beautifully simple, but its name has a surprisingly memorable story.

After all, what do diamonds have to do with tennis?

Long before it became known as the tennis bracelet, this classic style already existed.

Throughout much of the 20th century, similar designs were known as diamond line bracelets, or sometimes eternity bracelets: flexible bracelets featuring a continuous line of diamonds around the wrist. The style itself predates the name we recognize today by decades.

Elegant, understated and remarkably wearable, the diamond line bracelet had already established itself as a jewelry classic.

Then tennis entered the story.

The Moment That Changed Its Name

In 1978, tennis champion Chris Evert wore a diamond bracelet on her wrist while competing at the US Open.

During the match, the bracelet came off.

Play was stopped while Evert searched for it on the court, creating an unexpected intersection between professional tennis and fine jewelry. Evert later recalled the incident and the attention it attracted, and the bracelet became forever associated with her and the sport.

The elegant line of diamonds that had existed long before that match gradually became known by a new name:

The Tennis Bracelet.

A name born on the court.
A design that never really left.

From the Tennis Court to a Jewelry Essential

What makes the tennis bracelet so enduring is not only its history.

It is its simplicity.

A continuous line of diamonds creates a design that feels just as natural with an everyday look as it does for a special occasion.

Wear one on its own for timeless simplicity, pair it with a favorite watch or bangle, or layer different diamond sizes for a more expressive look.

Simple enough for every day.
Brilliant enough for everything else.

Crafted to Be Worn

The beauty of a tennis bracelet lies in its simplicity, which means every detail matters. The diamonds should create a harmonious line around the wrist, while the settings and links allow the bracelet to move naturally and comfortably.
